Nature holiday where dunes, beach and polder meet

Walk from your front door into the most beautiful dunes in the Netherlands.

Nature holiday at Camperduinen

There are few places in the Netherlands where you can walk into three landscapes from your front door. On one side the Schoorl Dunes, the highest and widest dunes in the country. On the other side the wide, quiet beach of Camperduin. And in between the peaceful polder De Putten, much loved by birdwatchers. At Camperduinen you stay right in the middle.

The Schoorl Dunes: 1,800 hectares of peace

Right behind the village begins one of the most special nature areas in the Netherlands: 1,800 hectares of dunes, woods and drifting sand, with 60 kilometres of walking trails.

Climb the Klimduin at Schoorl, walk through pine woods to the sea or follow one of the marked Staatsbosbeheer routes. In late summer the heather turns purple, and outside the high season you have the paths almost to yourself.

A beach that is never crowded

The beach at Camperduin is wide, quiet and never crowded, not even in summer. A bracing walk in a westerly wind, an afternoon in the sun or an evening stroll along the tideline: it is all 600 metres from your apartment.

Birdwatching at De Putten

Between the sea dyke and the polder lies De Putten, a well-known bird area where spoonbills, avocets and many waders come to feed. Bring your binoculars; the area is within walking distance.

Frequently asked questions about a nature holiday in Camperduin

How far is the beach?

The wide beach of Camperduin is 600 metres from your apartment: about a ten-minute walk or a few minutes by bike. On the way you pass the sea dyke with views over the polder.

Can I walk straight into the dunes from the apartment?

Yes. The Schoorl Dunes start at the village; within a few minutes you are walking in the area. There are 60 kilometres of paths, from short strolls to full-day hikes, and marked Staatsbosbeheer routes.

Is it nice outside the summer too?

Even more so. In spring the dune valleys are in bloom, in autumn you have the beach and paths almost to yourself. The apartments are comfortable all year round, and the villages of Schoorl and Bergen are lively outside the season too, with restaurants and museums that stay open.

What exactly is De Putten?

De Putten is a bird area between the sea dyke and the polder, within walking distance of your apartment. Birdwatchers know it for spoonbills, avocets and all kinds of waders. You can look out over it from the dyke, and binoculars make it even better.

Is Camperduin suitable if I don't have a car?

Absolutely. There is a direct bus from Alkmaar station towards Camperduin, and once here you can do almost everything on foot or by bike. There is a supermarket about one and a half kilometres away in Groet.
