Tulip fields in North Holland: stay at Camperduinen
In spring, the Kop van Noord-Holland (the northern tip of North Holland) turns red, yellow, pink and purple. Kilometres of bulb fields stretch out around the Zijpe polder, 't Zand, Callantsoog and Anna Paulowna. According to the organisers, it is the largest continuous bulb-growing area in the world.
Camperduinen is a short drive south of the fields. Cycle or drive to the tulips in the morning and be back by the sea in the afternoon. That way you combine flowers, dunes and beach in just a few days.
Bloeiend Zijpe and Land van Fluwel
Every spring, the Stichting Bloeiend Zijpe (Bloeiend Zijpe foundation) organises activities among the bulb fields. The foundation is run entirely by volunteers. Its website already lists dates for 2027, but these may still change.
- Tulpen Trailrun: running on wide sandy paths alongside the fields. In 2026 you could choose between 7.5 and 15 kilometres.
- Walking day: routes from 7.5 to 30 kilometres. Around fifty landowners open up their land that day, so you can walk where you normally can't.
- Cycling day: a 40-kilometre route, mostly on paved roads.
- Bloembollen Boemel: a covered ride with a Dutch-speaking guide, run together with Land van Fluwel.
Land van Fluwel in Sint Maartensvlotbrug has an 11-metre lookout tower over the fields and the Dutch Tulip Experience about the history of the tulip.
Practical: when to go and how to get there
The tulips are usually in bloom from mid-April to early May. The exact timing depends on the weather: later after a cold spring, earlier after a mild one. Bloeiend Zijpe's walking day and cycling day fall in the second half of April.
The fields are a short drive north of Camperduinen. Callantsoog is 9 kilometres away, about a quarter of an hour by car. On a fine day the bike is a great choice, as you can stop wherever you like. Do respect the fields, though: don't walk into them, except during the walking day. In 2026 the trail run started at camping De Nollen in Callantsoog. The Bloembollen Boemel departed from Land van Fluwel in 2026. For tickets, departure times and start locations in 2027, check the organisers' websites.
Current dates, times and registration can be found on the organiser's website.
